nami programs offer support, advocacy

NAMI North Carolina provides support, education, advocacy, and public awareness so that all affected by mental illness can build better lives. They are part of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), which has over 210,000 members in 1,200 affiliates across the country. Our very own, Mike Weaver, Mecklenburg County Consumer Affairs Specialist, serves on the NAMI National Board of Directors.

The NAMI movement focuses specifically on those mental illnesses that are brain disorders. For adults, serious mental illnesses include schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and other brain disorders. For children, the list of serious emotional disturbances includes the above illnesses, plus other behavioral disorders such as attention deficit disorder, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder.

Membership in the 34 affiliates in North Carolina consists of individuals who live with mental illness, family members of people with mental illness, friends, and professionals. Affiliates typically have monthly support meetings or educational and business meetings. When mental illness strikes, it is usually surrounded by confusion and isolation. Support groups can provide an opportunity to talk with other people who have "been there" and who understand what individuals living with mental illness are facing. General meetings have speakers on issues important to members.

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions has a contract with NAMI NC to provide the following programs across our region: Family-to-Family Education Program, In Our Own Voice (IOOV), Peer-to-Peer Education Program, and NAMI Connection support group.
