Mental Health Resources for the Latino Community During Coronavirus

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare — May 1, 2020 — 2 min read
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the Latinx community. Many parents have lost their jobs because they were not considered essential employees. Others have had to take time off to support their children’s education at home. Language can also be a barrier to many parents while helping their children with schoolwork. Furthermore, many families feel that they don’t have the right tools to assist their children’s learning.

These pandemic-related stressors often make families feel alone and without support—this would affect the emotional wellbeing of anyone. We at Cardinal Innovations Healthcare are committed to supporting the Latinx community during the COVID-19 crisis. Therefore, we have put together several useful tips that can help parents and families during this “stay-at-home” time.

1. Create a routine that is healthy and realistic for you and your family. Consistent schedules can help develop and maintain good habits and nourish mental health. A solid routine helps make a child feel safe and protected in stressful times such as these.

2. In your daily routine, take time to go on walks with your family, exercise, pray, cook together, play board games, or watch a movie. You can always contact your extended family over the phone to ask how things are going. All these activities can boost a child’s self-esteem, help them develop a positive attitude, and promote their communication skills. These can also support their school performance and, most importantly, strengthen your family’s bond during the pandemic.

3. Plan video calls or simple phone calls with family and friends. Staying in touch with loved ones is important, and technology can help you do this in a safe and healthy way.

4. Communicate with your family and your support network when necessary, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Feeling frustrated, sad, confused, or isolated during this time is normal—but you’re not alone. At Cardinal Innovations, we are dedicated to supporting you during this time.
