Mood disorders

Depressive disorders (depression), Bipolar Disorder, and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are all mood disorders. Depressive disorders can overwhelm a person with feelings of hopelessness and get in the way of his or her daily life. Bipolar Disorder usually involves unusual changes in a person’s mood, from highs to lows. SAD, or seasonal depression, is a type of depression that comes and goes depending on the season. People with mood disorders may:

  • Have feelings of sadness or guilt
  • Undergo changes in sleep or eating habits
  • Lose interest in usual activities
  • Feel either physically drained or irritated
  • Experience massive mood swings, including extreme highs and lows
  • Experience thoughts of suicide

No matter how severe the symptoms, people with mood disorders can get better with treatment. If you feel crushed by depression, bipolar disorder, or SAD, know that there are people who want to help you heal.
