Thompson Opens a New and Innovative Program for Adolescent Girls in Partnership with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare and Mecklenburg County

Thompson — March 07, 2019
Last fall, Thompson was selected to receive funding through Cardinal Innovations Healthcare's Community Reinvestment Initiative. The program opens this month and was forged through a partnership between Thompson, Mecklenburg County and Cardinal Innovations Healthcare. This new and innovative residential services program for adolescent girls was developed in response to the gap in residential and mental health services found and discussed in the recent report, Navigating the Maze, published in 2017 and commissioned by the Foundation for the Carolinas, the Children's Medical Fund, and Mitchell's Fund.

"Where we really struggle as a community is specialized care for female teenagers," said Cardinal's Laurie Whitson in the Navigating the Maze report. When the report came out, it noted there were no group homes for adolescent females with around-the-clock supervision in Mecklenburg County. Providers were referring teenage girls to other states, more than 200 miles away.

The program's ribbon cutting was held Monday morning. Thompson Board of Trustees Chair Gilbert Galle, Thompson President Will Jones, Deputy Department Director - Child & Family Services of Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services Dr. Jacqueline McKnight, and Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Vice President of Clinical Operations Christine Beck spoke to a crowd of community members, supporters and elected officials, including NC House Representative Rachel Hunt.

"We are persistently growing and shifting our work, forging new partnerships, to meet the ever-changing needs of our complex community. Through this and other partnerships, Thompson continually strives to meet the greatest needs of the community," said Will Jones, CEO and President of Thompson.

Cardinal Innovations created the Community Reinvestment Initiative as a way to make stable, sustainable investments across its 20-county service area. Through this initiative, Cardinal Innovations asked organizations to submit proposals for programs that would improve health outcomes for its members with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders.

"The goal of this effort was to identify and fund high-impact projects in our communities," said Cardinal Innovations Chief Executive Officer Trey Sutten. "We could not have been more pleased with the number of responses and the broad range of requests we received from organizations throughout our geography. We received so many innovative proposals that we actually made the decision to go beyond our original commitment-funding more than $4 million in projects. It's an investment in our members, providers and communities that is right in line with our mission."

During the three-month submission period ending May 1, 2018, Cardinal Innovations received hundreds of proposals from entities and organizations across its 20-county service area: Alamance, Cabarrus, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Mecklenburg, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Stokes, Union, Vance and Warren Counties. Per the submission requirements, proposals were accepted from municipalities, counties, public school systems, colleges and universities as well as other qualifying non-profits.

Projects were selected for funding through a comprehensive process that included reviews by members of a cross-departmental evaluation committee as well as reviews by the Cardinal Innovations Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors, followed by approval by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
