Steve Smith Family Foundation Announces Charitable Donation From Cardinal Innovations Healthcare

Steve Smith Family Foundation — April 08, 2021
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Steve Smith Family Foundation, launched in 2013 by former NFL football star Steve Smith Sr. and his wife Angie, announce today a charitable donation from Cardinal Innovations Healthcare.
Cardinal is pledging over $400,000 to the foundation to establish an afterschool program exclusive to housing-challenged and low-income children. The funding also extends virtual learning support through the end of the 2020-21 school year. Both programs are held at Northside Academy in Charlotte, NC.
At the onslaught of the pandemic in August 2020, the foundation launched a virtual learning center to support over 100 K-5 grade children in Charlotte Mecklenburg School’s McKinney Vento program - which provides resources to youth facing homelessness and living in shelters, motels, cars, living with friends, and without permanent residence. In conjunction with Urban League of Central Carolinas, and The Yes Academy, over eight support staff were hired to assist with tutoring, program management, homework completion, and activities. Transportation and no-cost meals are also provided.
The partnership with Cardinal Innovations allows the foundation to add additional enrichment services such as social and emotional learning, STEM-based initiatives, and physical activities, as well as shift to an afterschool model as students begin to return to physical school locations.
“Community partnerships are fundamental to our mission and values, and we are proud to expand our partnership with the Smith Family Foundation in service to children in Mecklenburg County,” said Trey Sutten, CEO of Cardinal Innovations. “So often, the health and stability of children and families is determined not by doctor’s office visits, but by understanding and meeting social needs with consistency and compassion.”
COVID-19 exposed grave needs in the education space, as highlighted by extreme lack of access to internet, a decrease in K-5 reading scores, and attendance in virtual setting plummeting. To date, the SSFF virtual learning center has seen attendance levels rise by 50%, a 30% increase in math and reading scores, the distribution of over 2,700 meals and zero reported COVID-19 cases.
“This kind of generosity is critical and necessary,” said Steve Smith Sr., founder of the Steve Smith Family Foundation. “Having an organization like Cardinal to recognize the need, and then pledge resources to families struggling with homelessness and upward mobility in the wake of everything going on in our city speaks volumes.”
The need is still great and funding will continue to be critical to stabilize our families. To donate to the Steve Smith Family Foundation, visit
