Message from the CEO – June 2, 2020

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare — June 02, 2020

Whenever I am faced with a terrible situation and I don’t know what to say, I say what I am feeling. As calmly and constructively as possible.

Right now, I feel anger, sadness, guilt, and anxiety. The events of the past few months, ranging from the health care disparities further exposed by COVID-19, the economic impact the pandemic has taken on the most vulnerable populations and now the recent images and videos of blatant racism and police brutality against the black community, have created a mess of emotion for me and those close to me.

As a white man, I cannot personally identify with what some of you may be feeling or experiencing. What I do know is that everyone is deserving of dignity, opportunity, respect, kindness, and the right to live, work, and be a part of community without fear. For those of you hurting, afraid, or impacted in any other way, know that you are not alone. I urge you to please reach out to those you feel safe confiding in – and/or call **ASK from your cell phone or 800-939-5911 to speak with someone who can help.

As a leader, I felt the urge to immediately do “something,” but I wasn’t sure the right course of action. I spoke with folks close to me that have been directly impacted. I was cautioned to not act just to make myself feel better and reminded that feeling uncomfortable is important to meaningful and long-term positive change. This problem wasn’t created overnight and being thoughtful is more important than being fast.

So, where do we go from here? We are going to listen, learn, and then take action.

This will be done through a series of formal and informal gatherings and conversations that will be guided and led by diversity, inclusion, and equity leaders both internal and external to Cardinal Innovations. I don’t know exactly what that plan will look like, but the entire team here at Cardinal is committed to driving tangible and positive change. In the coming days and months ahead, there will be opportunities for us to listen, learn, and take meaningful action both individually, and together.

Let me close by saying that Cardinal Innovations is committed to standing together, to delivering on our mission, and to improving the lives of our members, families and the communities we serve. We stand against racism, discrimination and social injustices and will not tolerate it anywhere that our voices and actions can reach. Please take care of yourselves, your families, and those you love.
