Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Sponsors HACKATHONclt MMXVII

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare — March 17, 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kannapolis, N.C. (March 17, 2017) – Cardinal Innovations Healthcare will sponsor HACKATHONclt MMXVII, the country’s largest Big Data hackathon, to showcase Charlotte’s growing technology scene on March 24 and 25 at Discovery Place Science in Uptown Charlotte.

Cardinal Innovations IT experts will join hundreds of other HACKATHONclt MMXVII participants, using their skills in a fast-paced overnight hackathon that aims to solve a not-for-profit related business problem using big data and digital technologies powered by cloud-based platforms. This year HACKATHONclt, which was founded by Harris Teeter and Tresata in 2013, will support Big Brothers Big Sisters in its mission to provide safe, successful and stable mentoring opportunities to all kids.

Cardinal Innovations, the nation’s largest specialty health plan, owns and operates a sophisticated technical system for processing claims and maintaining health service and eligibility records that is specifically tailored to operate in a managed care environment. CI Enterprise was developed to establish a total business solution for managed care to optimize financial and information technology services. The proprietary system offers unsurpassed state-of-the-art architecture, business systems and technical expertise, and is now used widely throughout North Carolina.

“Cardinal Innovations’ IT department works diligently to protect the digital information of all of its more than 850,000 members. HACKATHONclt is a great way for us to showcase our team’s talents while giving back to our community in a unique, fun way,” said Pete Murphy, Chief Information Office for Cardinal Innovations.

The Data Science and Business Analytics division of Cardinal Innovations IT department has a team of five employees, including two alternates, who will participate in the all night HACKATHONclt. To prepare for the hack, the team has been practicing and building more analytics muscles by training in Python coding, said Brent Matthewson, Director of Data Science for Cardinal Innovations. As they compete on March 24, the Cardinal Innovations hackers and other teams will mine massive datasets to solve relevant business problems.

HACKATHONclt attracts tech developers, designers, analysts, enthusiasts, and hackers-for-hobby and hosted nearly 350 people in 2016. Cardinal Innovations joins Tresata, Harris Teeter, DataChambers, MillerCoors, P&G, Kforce, Discovery Place, CSI, RapidOps, Avidxchange and Clarity Solution Group as sponsors for the event, which also is supported by CTS, Patterson Pope, Priceless Misc., Rose’s Transportation and Tecedge.

“HACKATHONclt is our way of giving back to a city we call home” said Abhishek Mehta, CEO of Tresata. “The scale this event has achieved is testament to the fact that we have one of the most dynamic technology communities in America, one which deserves to be celebrated and respected in equal measure.”

HACKATHONclt MMXVII kicks off Friday, March 24, and runs through the night, culminating in a final pitch for cash prizes on Saturday afternoon, all at Discovery Place Science. Not only is this the biggest hackathon in the country, it also carries one of the richest purses, with cash and kind prizes exceeding $20,000. While the hackathon is closed to the general public for the duration of the hacking, the event’s kickoff party and judging round will remain open.

“HACKATHONclt remains the once-a-year event that unites the tech community with non-profit organizations, giving nonprofits access to the same capabilities afforded to Charlotte’s business community,” said Danna Robinson, Communication Manager at Harris Teeter. This type of work has always been important to Harris Teeter.”

Tickets are free for spectators and participants and are available at www.hackathonCLT.org.
